Factors to Consider When Selecting Coffee Packaging

Coffee roasters know the importance of finding the right bean supplier, using the best coffee beans, and ensuring that each batch is roasted to perfection. But did you know that taking these steps is only half the battle? That's right: to ensure that your products will sell and your customers will be satisfied, you must also use high-quality coffee packaging. Not sure how to select the proper packaging for your ground coffee or coffee beans? You can start by taking note of the following factors:

1. Pouch Type

Stand-up pouches are some of the most common options for coffee bags. As their name suggests, they're designed to perfectly stand on shelves regardless of the filling weight, making your products more visible to potential customers and making them stand out. However, it's best to use gusseted bags if you're selling coffee beans or ground coffee in large volumes. They're designed to expand at the sides and the bottom and can accommodate more of the product. You'll also want to decide whether your pouches will have an integrated zipper or not. Having a built-in zipper can be greatly helpful since it allows your customers to reseal the packaging and keep the coffee beans fresh. However, due to their design, some types of pouches (such as the four-side seal bag) can't be made with integrated zippers.

2. Barrier Property

Your roasting packaging should be designed to uphold the freshness of your coffee products and ensure they'll have the same level of quality when they reach your customers' homes. For many companies, the best option is 3-ply coffee pouches with pure aluminum barriers, which are highly effective in keeping out oxygen, UV rays, and other factors that can affect the freshness of coffee beans and ground coffee. However, if you're looking for more environmentally friendly packaging, you can opt for 2-ply laminate pouches that come with high-barrier polyester and are highly recyclable. Regardless of which barrier type you choose, you have to ensure that your pouches will have a degassing valve. This removes the CO2 from the bag once it's sealed with a heat sealer, ensuring that your products stay fresh for a long time.

3. Filling Process

How do you plan to fill your coffee bags? If you’re using the G14 or any other type of vertical form, fill, and seal packaging machine, you’ll want to use G14 coffee packaging that's designed to be compatible with your equipment. On the other hand, if you manually fill in the coffee bags, you'll want to ensure that the opening of your packaging is large enough to accommodate your scoop or funnel. Take note of these factors to select the best possible packaging for your coffee products!
